“Sketches Takeaway, Lunch From Around The World”
This is a great takeaway, I’ll say this again, this is a really a great takeaway! The worst thing about Sketches on Chillingham Road in Heaton is simply that it isn’t in the centre of the city and accessible to more people. Owner Paul Wilkinson set up Sketches in April 2004 after spending his earlier career working as a chef in Newcastle. His concept for Sketches was to do something a little different and make available to the public a variety of foods from around the world inspired by his travels to Africa, the Caribbean, Italy, France and Spain which certainly break the lunchtime monotony of tuna savouries or chicken salads.
The range of sandwiches, wraps, toasted panini, jacket potatoes, salads and sweets is truly impressive with options such as Lebanese flatbreads, cous cous, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, houmous, sun dried tomato tortillas, hoi sin duck, Thai sweet chilli beef to name but a few. In contrast to some of the chains that can be found along that street all the ingredients are locally sourced with the breads being hand pulled and produced by one of Paul’s friends up in Monkseaton. Many of the sweets like apple pies, rhubarb crumble and chocolate brownies are made on site too. You would imagine that for such good quality food you would pay a premium but a generous sized sandwich or wrap on average will cost you around £2.50.
Overall Sketches provides fantastic value for money, however don’t take my word for it, go and see for yourself, you won’t regret it!
